Last year I made a small trip to Spain with my mom and brother. They came to Germany to visit me so we always try to plan once a year a family trip and spend some time together. We did not have much time at the end since most of the time was spent in Germany we decided that before they left back to Costa Rica from Madrid we visit the fantastic city of Segovia. It is absolutely worth going specially if you are staying in Madrid and want to do more things.
First thing, transportation it’s really the easiest you can take either a bus or the train from Estación de Atocha. I always recommend the train in my opinion is fun and faster, it takes about half hour to the main station in Segovia. From the station you can either take a bus to the city center or a taxi. If you are in a group the best at the end is a taxi, it really is not expensive, so no worries.
What to see
The Roma Aqueduct is the main attraction, it is jaw dropping worth worth the while. It is 2000 years of being built, this fact I know well because it turned that aged the same day we visit according to locals.
The Cathedral of Segovia is the last gothic church built in Spain. There is a library collection that was donated to the Cathedral with the very first book that was printed in Spain.
The Alcazar is the Segovia Castle that was first built during Roman times. In fact, that was one of the things that caught my attention the influence of Rome in the city. There’s even a bit outside the city a coliseum like the one in Rome but smaller. You’ll see it on your way to the station.
The rooftops which you’ll see all over have the most surreal views of the city and medieval military architecture.
Very important the food, Spanish food is one of my favourites but every region has it own dishes and culture. In Segovia the Cochinillo ( suckling pig ) is the most traditional dish of the region. It is a heavy dish so I really recommend to share it. My brother is quite big and he also felt dizzy after he finished jejejej. And Judiones, it is a large white bean used to make stews usually with chorizo or tocino (bacon). Yum! Very important also in summer it gets really really hot, you need to stay hydrated and make short pauses.
Segovia is a small city that can be done in one day. In case you don’t have much time but still want to see something amazing, Segovia is worth the trip. Let me know what other tips you know around Madrid to go and visit.
